# 🛟 What protects your data if a sync goes wrong

SyncBase syncs data both ways in real time, so it's fair to ask what happens if something goes wrong. This guide lists the safety nets you have — before, during and after a sync.

# Before you make a big change

* **Test on a single record first.** Edit one product or one variant, check the result in Shopify, then do the rest. This is the single most effective safeguard.
* **Use the bulk update flow for large edits** instead of live webhooks — it pauses the sync, lets you edit, then pushes everything in one operation.

# What SyncBase can and cannot touch

SyncBase syncs **data values**. It does **not** change the structure of your Shopify store from Airtable: it cannot delete a metafield definition or alter your store's setup.

# If a sync misbehaves

### 1. Check the sync status panel (SyncBase app)

In the **SyncBase app** in your Shopify admin, the status panel shows the health of your Airtable token, your Airtable webhooks and your Shopify webhooks. This is the first place to look when the sync is not behaving as expected.

### 2. Read the errors table (Airtable)

Every sync error is logged with an explanation in the dedicated errors table of your synced base. You can build an Airtable automation on that table to get an email or a Slack alert whenever a new error appears.

||| SyncBase retries a failed sync automatically. Once the retries are exhausted, the error is written to the errors table and is **not** retried again — so the errors table is what you monitor.

### 3. Realign your data with a refresh

If Shopify and Airtable have drifted apart, you can refresh a single record, a whole table, or your entire base on demand. You do not need to relaunch the synchronization.

# Rolling back a bad edit

###### In Airtable

* **Record history** — every field change is timestamped with who made it.
* **Snapshots** — restore a previous version of the base. Available on Airtable's Business and Enterprise plans.

###### In Shopify

* **Product version history** — restore a previous version of a product. It works product by product, so it is a fix for a few records, not for a whole catalog.

# Good to know

* Raw sync logs are kept for **7 days**; summarised logs are kept longer. If you need us to investigate a specific incident, reach out and give us the date and the record.
* If you are about to make structural changes, build them in a staging setup first.
